Love to glow like your favorite celebrity at the end of your everyday skincare routine? Who doesn’t, right?
While we enjoy performing the ten-step routine, our skin does not always reciprocate it well. You may believe that doing so will keep those pesky pimples at bay, but did you know that we are actually damaging our skin's barrier? Result? Skin that is dull, dry, itchy, and red.
Now that your skin barrier is damaged, let’s get to know what you should do to make it healthy again.
- Say no to harsh cleansers
Using a harsh cleanser on your face is enough to damage your barrier. We've all made the mistake of thinking that washing our faces only helps to remove the day's dirt and pollution. That, however, is not the case.
A harsh cleanser that contains ingredients that strip your skin's natural oils can cause dryness, irritation, and inflammation. Look for a cleanser that cleans yet hydrates your skin at the same time.
Choose cleanser containing hydrating ingredients such as Centella asiatica, hyaluronic acid, and glycerin.
- Dampen your face with warm water rather than hot or cold water. Make a foam with a dollop of your cleanser. Cleanse for a maximum of 60 seconds. Using a cotton towel, pat your face dry rather than rubbing it.
- Banish exfoliants
We all love a good exfoliation session because we think that clean skin is the solution to all your problems. But little do we know that going overboard with scrubs can make the skin highly sensitive.
Avoid using exfoliating treatments, whether physical or chemical, because they can further irritate our skin.
- What should you do?
If the skin seems highly inflamed, apply a cold compress or use an ice roller. Once you feel your face has calmed down, apply a thick layer of aloe vera gel or a hydrating moisturizer that has healing properties. Add a Jade roller face yoga tool regime to your skincare routine.
- Moisturize like there is no tomorrow!
Moisturize your skin
Moisturizing your skin thoroughly is one of the most important skin habits that anyone will ever tell you to maintain a healthy skin barrier. Our skin, whether oily or dry, requires adequate moisturization.
Look for these components in your moisturizer:
- Humectants: Helps locks in hydration.
Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, peptides, glycerin, and propylene glycol.
- Emollients: Smoothes and softens the skin.
Ingredients such as shea butter, mineral oil, petroleum and lanolin.
- Ceramides: The 'glue' that holds your skin barrier together.
Ingredients such as ceramide.
- Make sunscreen your best friend
Did you know that one of the most common causes of barrier damage is UV rays?
One of the most important steps in your morning skincare routine is the application of sunscreen. When you don't use it, your skin gets exposed to UV radiation, which can damage the barrier, cause photoaging, and even skin cancer.
- Take care of yourself
Whether it's a three-step or ten-step routine, nothing will work for you unless you take care of yourself. Our bad habits tend to show up on our skin in the form of acne, inflammation, dryness, and dullness.
Drink plenty of water, eat a nutritious diet, get plenty of rest, and make time to relax.
